Happy Monday — if you scroll through today's edition, you'll notice a pattern: cellphones in schools keep showing up. Washington state just signed a law to study phone limits, but advocates say it doesn't go far enough. Massachusetts is moving toward a House vote on banning phones during the school day. Indiana is implementing one of the strictest bans in the country — and local administrators are already questioning how to enforce it. South Carolina, a year after its statewide phone ban, is now requesting $17.6 million to build on that effort and educate students about the impact of phones and social media on their well-being.
More than 40 states have now enacted some form of cellphone restriction, with five acting just this year. The question has shifted from whether to limit phones in schools to how far and how — and the answer seems to be that nobody has it fully figured out.
That's exactly why I’m looking forward to moderating a conversation tomorrow — Tuesday, April 7, at Noon ET (9 a.m. PT) — where we willll explore what different approaches to cellphone policies look like in practice, what the research tells us, and how school and district leaders can think more clearly about this evolving challenge. You'll hear from Angela Duckworth (University of Pennsylvania / Character Lab), Jonah Edelman (Stand for Children), Julia Gustafson (The Commons), Lisa O'Masta (Learning.com), and Joseph South (ISTE+ASCD). I hope you'll join us!
One last thing — we're running a short reader survey to help shape What We're Reading and would love to hear from you!
