Happy Thursday!

A theme running through today's reading: the complicated relationship between technology and learning. Natalie Wexler pushes back on the idea that ed tech "broke" a system that was otherwise working fine, arguing the problems run deeper than screens. Meanwhile, The New York Times rounds up what students themselves are saying about screen time in school — and their answers are more nuanced than you might expect.

On the higher ed side, new Gallup-Lumina polling finds nearly half of college students have considered changing their major because of AI's impact on the job market, with 16% saying they've already made the switch. Axios and Business Insider both have good takes on the data.

I also found this piece on a DARPA-funded effort to build AI systems that could predict whether scientific studies will replicate to be fascinating. The short answer: we're not there yet. It's not strictly an education story, but worth a read alongside The 74's recent look at the future of the Institute for Education Sciences — and the work folks like Sara Schapiro and the Alliance for Learning Innovation are doing to strengthen the education research pipeline.

One last thing — we're running a short reader survey to help shape What We're Reading and would love to hear from you.
